I am going through a change. As a reader, definitely, and as a writer, I’m praying. Suddenly, I’m noticing nuances in a story like I had never before.
I am reading Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat. And this story has boldly made me aware of the rhythm in her work. Her words sing on the page. And I mean that. I can hear the words in my mind chanting to a beat. Brandilyn Collins calls it Sentence Rhythm. Some authors have it more than others. I have heard it before, knew it was there, but had never realized (or was ready to realize) that it is real element to writing. And it’s a complex element. To me, that is. I imagine it will take a careful ear and a lot of practice to master how its done.
